RF CAVITY DESIGN FOR A LOW-COST 1 MeV PROTON SOURCE
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we present the design for a low-cost RF cavity capable of accelerating protons from 100 keV to 1MeV. The system is designed to meet the specifications from the proposed Alceli LTDmedical proton therapy linac, to deliver a 1 nA proton beam current with a 1 kHz repetition rate. We present a design of an RF normal conducting (NC) re-entrant Cu cavity operating at 40MHz consisting of a coupled two cavity system, both driven by a single Marx generator. The choice of such a low operating frequency for the cavity system enables us to use a relatively low-cost cost Marx Generator as the RF source. Marx generators work in a similar fashion to a Cockcroft-Walton accelerator (without the expensive components), creating a high-voltage pulse by charging a number of capacitors relatively slowly in parallel, then rapidly discharging in series, via spark gaps. Marx generators can deliver 2.5GW, 1 ns pulses, with rise times of 200 ps, and (relatively) low jitter.

An optimal design of a low energy ~300 MeV! proton synchrotron for medical applications is addressed. The machine has the following properties: ~1! The transition energy is higher than the targets final proton beam energy of 300 MeV; ~2! the betatron tunes are chosen such that the machine is free of systematic resonances; ~3! the machine can accommodate both slow and fast extraction systems; an...

متن کاملSuperconducting Rf - New Directions*
In the last two years, there has been substantial progress in superconducting accelerator technology both in long term operation at many facilities as well as in high gradients at many laboratories. These rapid advances have made RF superconductivity an enabling technology for a variety of new applications. In high energy physics, low frequency (200 400 MHz) cavities are envisioned to acceler...
متن کاملA Procedure to Set Phase and Amplitude of the Rf in the Sns Linacs Superconducting Cavities*
This paper describes a procedure to set the phase and amplitude of the RF fields in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) linacs superconducting cavities. The linac uses superconducting cavities to accelerate the H ion beam from the normal conducting linac at 185 MeV to a final energy of ~1 GeV. There are two types of cavities in the linac, 33 cavities with a geometric beta of 0.61 and 48 caviti...
